Guest Post: Wee Knit Hat – a Baby Hat with pompom

 By Kristen Mangus

Hi, I am Kristen Mangus, the knitting video host and designer behind the channel GoodKnit Kisses.  It is a pleasure to be a knitting host for Yarnspirations in 2017. I hope you enjoy the latest blog and tutorial for YOU.

Learn how to knit the baby hat featured in the Wee Stripes Knit Pullover and Hat pattern from the Modern Nursery Lookbook by Yarnspirations!

Wee Baby Hat

First let me just say that the babies in the Modern Nursery Lookbook are totally adorable and steal the show!  Why? Because they are wearing a super adorable pullover and hat that’s why! …Okay and they are babies.  Ha!

The pullover sweater in the main pattern features stripes. The hat compliments the accent stripe in a matching pompom to complete the ensemble.  I love that this set is totally cute and unisex.  You can safely knit away early for your precious baby or grandbaby on the way till your heart’s desire.  There are so many colors to choose from in the Bernat Softee Baby yarn as well but I really do love the Little Mouse color I used; in fact my husband asked me to make one for him!

The yarn is super smooth and soft! I love how the Bernat Softee Baby yarn worked up.  The stitches came out nice and uniform.  They are all nice and smooth and soft to the touch.  It isn’t too fluffy and is a really tailored looking pattern in this yarn. I was surprised at how much I liked this yarn in the pompom as well.  The pompom worked up super light and soft.  It wasn’t too heavy feeling as some pompoms feel.

Although the pullover has stripes, you could absolutely add an accent strip into your baby hat as well. The Wee Knit Hat features a garter brim with stocking stitch body and a decreased crown, which works to a point, for an elf-like pointed beanie and topped with a pompom.

The hat is knit bottom up in a flat panel and seamed. In the tutorial I cover all of it.  If you cringe at the thought of a seam I will gently urge you to consider it a nice, small practice project before diving into seaming a sweater; if this is your first time.

The pattern falls in the EASY SKILL level for knitting.  I cover all stitches, increases, decreases, seaming, weaving tails and making a pompom so if this is your first knitting project you will have all skills needed in this video.  If you have never knit a stitch before I do recommend learning to longtail cast on, knit and purl with one of my slower videos first.

Let’s make this baby hat together!

This video features the pattern using Bernat Softee Baby yarn. It is a Light 3 weight yarn in 100% acrylic. This yarn has been tested for harmful substances. “Bernat Softee Baby Yarn has been tested for harmful substances and approved according to the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, so you can stitch on with the confidence that your baby is wrapped up in a project made with care.”-Yarnspirations

SIZES: The tutorial features the 6-12 month size.  The pattern also calls for a 18-24 month sizes as well.  I go over instructions for this size as well in the video.

Basic knit and purl stitches – The basic garter stitch pattern with all knit stitches are featured in the brim. The main body is a basic stocking stitch using purls on the reverse. This is a great first hat for a beginner.

There are a few increases that we will cover and then the main shaping are simple decreases.  Those are also covered in the video tutorial.
