2015 Mystery Afghan Knit & Crochet-Along FAQ

Q: What is it a KAL/CAL?

A: A Knit-Along (KAL) or Crochet-Along (CAL) is simply good people knitting or crocheting a project together! In this case, the project is an afghan. You can share your experiences and your triumphs, meet new friends, learn new skills with every clue, and you’ll have an amazing afghan at the end!

Q: How does it work?

A: Starting on Tuesday February 10th, check in here every Tuesday to get your weekly clue! Every week, you’ll put your clues together to reveal the mystery pattern and watch your afghan grow.

Q: When does it start and how long does it last?
A: The first clue will be available on Tuesday, February 10th, and the KAL/CAL will go on for 10 weeks, ending on April 14th.

Q: How big is the finished afghan?
A: The crochet afghan will be approx 45” x 57” [114.5 x 144.5 cm], and the knit afghan will be approx 52” x 56” [132 x 142 cm].

A: You can use any yarn you’d like as long as it’s the right gauge, but we recommend using the yarns that the patterns are designed in for best results.

Q: My postal code isn’t being accepted!

A: No worries! If you’re outside of the US or Canada, just type in 00000 and you’ll be good to go!

Q: Can I use different colors than the ones in the pattern?
A: Of course! We’ve created several Mystery Afghan kits to get you inspired, but you’re welcome to get creative and choose your own colors.

Q: What is the pattern difficulty level?

A: The clues in the afghan pattern range from Easy to Intermediate. Don’t worry if you’re not an experienced knitter or crocheter – you’ll have plenty of help and video tutorials along the way!

Q: Where can I get help if I have questions or need help?

A: We’re always here to help! If you have any questions, chat with us on the Yarnspirations Facebook page or send us an email at inquire@yarnspirations.com.

  1. I and a co-worker took the Mystery Afghan 2015 challenge; she took the crochet and I did the knit. The Crochet Crowd’s Mickey really drove the crochet side and the entries were stupendous!!! For all of the work we knitters had to put in for our version, it seemed the challenge became uneven, both in execution and the anti-climatic finish. I can’t imagine there were more than a hundred knitted afghans completed, compared to the thousands of crocheted afghan, and prizes awarded. I enjoyed creating my knitted afghan and the result is truly amazing, but it would have been nice to have the same level of motivation and excitement driving the knit as there was for the crochet.

  2. Have thoroughly enjoyed both the KAL and the CAL – it’s too bad that Yarnspirations didn’t do videos for the KAL’s like what Mikey did for the CAL. He’s fabulous and it’s so beneficial being able to see what it actually looks like as we go along. Several people struggled with Clue 8 on the KAL and it would have been nice to have had a matching video. Perhaps, if Yarnspirations does this type of thing again, we could get videos for the knitters too!
It’s sure been a lot of fun nevertheless!

  3. where do we go to get the clues for the CAL?

  4. just curious is size H hook manditory ? I have tried to use it and its very frustrating crochet snag crochet snag will i be flustered before i am finished the challenge…please say its ok to use the size hook your used to ……thanks for any help you can give

  5. I’m left handed and I taught myself so will I have a problem figuring out the stitches when shown right handed??

  6. I understand that the first clue will be released on Tuesday 10 th – does that mean for Australians it will be Wednesday 11 th ???

  7. So Clues are actually the instructions? Where will I find video instructions if also available?

  8. Hi I don’t do fave book etc, will I be able to join? Have my progress pictures sent to where and/or how? Just heard about this today. Please get back to me as soon as possible.

  9. Hi there :)
I’ve just signed up for the mystery Afghan challenge, and ordered one of the Bernat packs as my choice of yarn – unfortunately, I just read that this yarn was meant for those who are knitting – but I’m a crocheter!
Will the yarn choice make a difference to my afghan, & will I have enough yarn to complete it with the amount I bought, please?

    • Hi! Did you order Bernat Softee Chunky? If so this will definitely make a difference — the CAL afghan is designed in Caron Simply Soft, which is worsted weight. You’ve got Bernat Softee Chunky, which is a super bulky yarn…so it will be very different. You’d be much better off using worsted weight yarn for your CAL afghan.

  10. I read this On the FAQ page… Q: Do I have to use the yarn specified in the pattern?
A: You can use any yarn you’d like as long as it’s the right gauge, but we recommend using the yarns that the patterns are designed in for best results.

My QUESTION is… What is the right gauge?

  11. Will there be a Ravelry group for this?

Also, several have asked about finished sizes. Can you let us know on that as well?

  12. I have been trying to sign up for the mystery afghan, but I keep getting the message to enter a valid email address. What info is needed in the four blank spaces in the sign up box?

  13. Several questions:

The colors I like are out of stock – and don’t seem to be available locally, either. When do you expect online stock to be replenished?

I see several kits now available using Bernat Satin. Is it a direct interchange or will pattern adjustments have to be made? Some colors of Satin have less yardage than others, how much *yardage* do we need?

Can we use a mix of Satin and Simply Soft?

Are there any others of your yarns that we can use?

  14. Hi Cori I live in Australia can you advise me as to the equal yarn brands so I have the correct yarns to crochet along with you all. I am so excited at starting but the brand for yarn is a problem, I am only a beginner so it is a mystery to me. I used scraps last year but it all looked good when I was finished but I want to be on the right track this time. Love you all over there.

  15. I’ve never worked with gauges before. I always use a J or K hook with red heart yarn. Would this be a satisfactory substitute? I’m trying to make sure I stay within the gauge. Also I was thinking of using all verigated yarn would that be suitable? This is the first time I ever heard of a mystery afghan challenge as well as the first time I ever participated in one. Looking forward to trying it out.

  16. Why so many more crochet color and yarn options than knit options?

  17. Each clue comes out on Tuesday. Approximately how long will it take an experienced knit or crochet guy or gal to complete a clue? Work could possibly be a problem for me ;-(

  18. The crochet kits include a Bernat Satin option with the same number of skeins as the Caron Simply Soft. The yardages differ significantly. What are the correct yardages needed for the main and contrast colors. Thank you! I look forward to participating.

  19. I tried to order says sold out?

  20. Would be nice to see a picture of the finished product. Would help picking out colors

  21. I received my ;yarn for the CAL, thank you very much. Will the pattern instructions be available on Feb. 10th? This is my first CAL?

  22. I am a new beginner and have never made anything. Will the instructions be simple enough for me to understand?

  23. Can you do both knit & crochet

  24. Connie Stitzlein January 25, 2015 at 10:15 am

When can I expect to receive the yarn kit for the Afghan Crochet-Along? I’m leaving on vacation January 31 and was hoping I would have the kit by then. Thanks!

  25. Hi, would like to take part but being in the UK I’m not sure what yarn category to use, please help

  26. Do you have an answer yet on the approximate finished size of the afghan? Thanks!

  27. I have never done a crochet along but I am going to give this one a try. I am going to do it for my daughter to give as a wedding gift at a wedding she is in and I am using the wedding colors. Im excited to get started and scared at the same time LOL

    • I guess I left out my question. When making own color scheme how do you decide the order of the 3 contrast colors?

      • This is a great question. I would like to know the same thing, since I chose my own colors. Should dark follow light, or should it be dark, medium, light, contrast? Help!!!!

    • Glad to have you participating, Debarah!
Giving the blanket as a wedding gift is such a lovely idea. I just got married last year and I can tell you that handmade gifts were some of the ones that we were most touched by. That kind of care and effort definitely doesn’t go unnoticed! I’m sure your daughter and the happy couple will love it. :)

  28. I noticed that the knit supplies under the link require more yarn and have 5 colors for each color way. The initial 2015 mystery quilt lists 4 colors for the crochet along. Is this correct?

  29. I love jewel colors and have plenty of yarn for the project already. I want contrast A Kelly Green, contrast B Harvest Red, contrast C Royal Blue, contrast D Sunshine yellow. Without knowing the pattern, I’m unsure the order of the supporting B, C, and D colors. Would you advise a change in the order of my colors to achieve a nicely balanced color scheme?

  30. I some of the yarn colours are out of stock for the crochet afghan version 3. When will you be getting more of the stock in?

  31. I signed up when I first saw this, but when I came back today I could not find it?? I signed up in the 15%off block for crown jewel tones I am new to this type of crocheting, so a step by step instruction for me would be extremely helpful, I tried to sign up again and it said I already had an account???

  32. One question? Is the afghan done in rows or squares? I don’t do well with squares.

  33. Carolyn Garrett January 22, 2015 at 2:02 pm

I would like to join — can I get my yarn locally? Also, how do I get the pattern?

  34. I have signed up for the Mystery Afghan Crochet Along, I am lost when I go to try and find inspiration for color choices etc. I click on mystery afghan kits and get pictures of afghans, Please advise me what to do. And I did not see the color items when I signed up! TIA Michele

  35. Hi I am going to attempt the CAL and i would like to check if it is a Aran weight I have stacks of wool at home and have quite a few large balls of Aran does it have to be a four colour way! I have solid and matching variegated colours so can I do a two colour way? Or will that be a problem with the giveaway Mickey is doing? Thanks heaps I hope I can keep up

  36. The knitted version takes a lot more yarn than the crocheted version (24 skeins and 4 different needles) — I’d like to know the finished size of each (knitted and crocheted) before I decide which one to do — can you let us know what size we can expect?

  37. Is there a place where we can see the pre picked color schemes to decide

  38. Mickey from Crochet Crowd is offering a prize pack for the Crochet Along. Is there anything being offered for the Knit along?

  39. BRING TO ON !

  40. What is the cost? Can’t seem to find it on either website?.

  41. Tried to sign up for the Mystery Quilt 2015 and acknowledge the email address is listed correctly and the listed zip code is correct. Thanks

  42. I’m from Mexico and want to order the supplies from your website, but my country doesn’t appear at checkout, is there any way I can buy supplies at your online store?

  43. Do your supply have to be purchased from the above site ? Why can I not go to craft store and purchase my own yarn?

  44. icingonthefairycake January 20, 2015 at 1:41 pm
